Background on PAUL the app

  • What is PAUL?

Paul is the only mobile video service that supports playback and offline consumption.. At launch, Paul can pre-download (and save for later viewing) video from Facebook, YouTube, CNN, LastFM, ESPN Sportscenter and Twitter. To aggregate video from these various sources and to give users the content they actually want, the app monitors user behavior to learn what content you prefer and when is the best time to schedule downloads. Then, videos can be watched in the native apps or through Paul. inmobly is in the process of building a recommendation engine to personalize content delivery based on user preferences.

  • Why PAUL?

PAUL is named in honor of the “psychic” octopus that predicted the 2010 World Cup Soccer winners. PAUL (the app) channels his psychic energy from machine learning algorithms, providing you the songs and videos you want, before you ask for them.

  • How much does PAUL cost? Where do I get PAUL?

PAUL is a free download from the Google Play store.

  • What platforms does PAUL support?

Using PAUL the app

  • Why is PAUL asking for a VPN connection?

With a VPN connection, PAUL is able to delivery the quality content you want within the apps we support.  If the VPN is activated, you will see “via PAUL” in the title of videos in CNN, ESPN, and YouTube.  That text indicates that PAUL has already loaded the video for you. You can watch it with no loading delays, and no worries about data charges.

  • Why is the VPN disconnecting and asking for me to reauthorize?

The VPN disconnects whenever your phone resets or turns off, or if another VPN connection is authorized.  If you activate a VPN connection on another app, it will turn off the VPN from PAUL.

  • What does [via PAUL] mean in video titles?

This is PAUL’s way of letting you know that this video is already on your phone – ready to watch with no buffering.  PAUL preloads videos to your phone from your favorite apps, and let’s you watch them from their original source, or within PAUL the app.  Any place you see [via PAUL] you can know you’re getting that same great PAUL quality of service, with no buffering interruptions.

  • How often does PAUL get my videos?

PAUL gets videos and songs whenever you are on WiFi, unless you have temporarily suspend the schedule.  Periodically PAUL will notify you that there is new content, but you don’t have to wait for that notification to see new videos.

  • How can I keep videos from being replaced?  Can I save videos?

Within the settings menu you can choose to “keep videos longer.”  PAUL will only overwrite old videos when new ones are downloaded. Due to copyright issues PAUL cannot allow you to save videos.

  • How do I share videos and songs?

Simply click the share button to share the video link, to email, twitter, facebook, etc. Due to copyright issues, PAUL does not allow you to share music links.

  • How do I delete videos and songs I don’t want?

User deletion is not supporting in V1.0 of PAUL, but will be incorporated in future versions.  In V1.0,  content will be deleted by the app as new content becomes available.

  • I am not interested in all the videos PAUL loads, only some. How do I get only the videos I want?

PAUL is always learning. Occasionally PAUL will ask you within the app what content you like or don’t like to help him provide the right stuff. If that’s not happening fast enough, let us know.

  • PAUL is asking for a Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm login and I don’t have an account.  How do I turn this off?

Use the frequency icon in the top menu to change the Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm frequency to “none.”  PAUL will stop scheduling downloads from these sources and these notifications will disappear within a few hours.

  • I changed the app frequencies to None for Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm, but PAUL is still asking for a Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm login. Why?

Since we preload your videos, PAUL has already planned out a few hours ahead. When those Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm tasks are skipped, you won’t see any new twitter login requests. You can go to the PAUL schedule under “What’s Coming” and manually delete them also.

  • I have a last.fm account but I am not getting any songs. Why not?

Last.fm requires a paid subscription to stream music over mobile.  If you have an account but not a paid subscription, PAUL will not be able to bring you music.

  • How do I disconnect my facebook/twitter/youtube/last.fm account?

In the Settings menu, swipe to the last page – you can manage your connections here.

  • Why does PAUL want to connect with my Facebook/Twitter account? Will PAUL post to my Facebook/Twitter account?

With a Facebook connection, PAUL can load videos posted in your Facebook/Twitter feed so you can watch them with no delay, easy playback, and even offline. PAUL does not post to your Facebook/Twitter unless you ask to share a video link.
